The Mid York Mycological Society (M.Y.M.S.) was founded in 1985 by residents of the Rome/Utica area who had studied mushrooms and other fungi under the guidance of Alan Bessette, Ph.D., professor of mycology at Utica College. Dr. Bessette agreed to serve as an advisor to the club and served it well until 2008 when he retired and moved to Florida. At that time, Dr. Bryant Buchanan, professor of biology, generously agreed to sponsor the club. Dr. Bessette's field guides are indispensable to the club's efforts at identification of fungi, especially his Mushrooms of Northeastern North America, available at Amazon.com.
Meetings:
Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month, April - November, at 7:00 p.m. in DePerno Hall (behind the library) of Utica College, Utica NY. Programs and presentations are usually scheduled for these meeting times. A list and description of currently scheduled programs is provided by the "Programs" link in the menu at left.
Forays:
"Forays" are field excursions to look for mushrooms with other club members - to enjoy their beauty, to develop our skills in mushroom identification, and sometimes to collect favorite edibles for the pot!
